Howie Day is an American singer-songwriter. Day has been known for his extensive touring and in-concert use of samplers and effects pedals in order to accompany himself.

Interestingly, Howie has one pedalboard that has effects he uses for his vocals, and another pedalboard that has the effects for his guitar.

Let's look at some of the gear and equipment that has been seen in Howie Day's guitar rig.

  • Hi there ... I've never owned a pedal in my life but am about to start. I love Howie Day's style and sound and want have many questions about his rig. For starters, why does he use an A/B box at the start of his vocal chain? Is it to switch away from effects when he talks to the audience? Geez I'm such a rookie at this! Thanks all!

  • I couldn't tell you exactly what he uses the A/B box for specifically, but i can tell you it doesn't have anything to do with the effects.

Ultimately, what you need to have what he has, is a un-powered mixer, a mic with either a DI converter, or just a XLR to 1/4 jack, which will allow you to plug the mic straight into these "guitar" pedals that he has. The mixer allows you to be more flexible and specific with regards to the mic and guitar, and ultimate dictation of the amps/PA system you are using. It's relatively easy, you just need to learn about the equipment specifically, and you'll pick it up pretty fast.
